David - Customer Project Manager
What originally drew you to the company?
I wanted to work with a world leader in the field of telecommunications that has a global presence and offers a total solution, from networks to mobile phone technology.
What projects have you worked on in your present job?
- Turn key projects for OEMs
- Customer support project for Asian ODMs developing 2G and 3G devices
And what is your current project?
We’re helping a manufacturer in Taiwan develop 3G handsets from a number of EMP Platforms. Soon they’ll begin 3.5G PDA product developments as well.
Our customer is also developing PDAs which use the Windows Mobile Operating Systems and the EMP platform to support quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, tri-band UMTS/HSDPA, WiFi and Bluetooth amongst other features.
EMP provides a platform package consisting of documentation, reference hardware and software. This is augmented with telephone, email and practical on-site support as necessary.
The multi-disciplinary support team is spread over sites in Sweden, Taiwan, USA, Norway and the UK and this is coordinated by the Customer Project Manager.
What do you like most about the company?
There’s a good atmosphere at EMP, inherited from our parent company in Sweden. Think of it as "cool, calm and collected". The nature of the business means there’s pressure but you’re working with people who know what they are doing and you can always find a contact to help you with any issues.
What do you enjoy about your job? And what’s the single best thing?
Making things happen and moving the project and the customer forward. The job requires a great deal of focus and determination. The best part has to be when the customer gets to market.
Are there resources or facilities that particularly impress you?
EMP develops and maintains its platforms and as a result has a detailed knowledge of its products. There are great engineering resources you can use to resolve problems, within EMP globally and the wider Ericsson business.
What would you say to people thinking of applying?
EMP is one of those "best kept secrets". Our technology’s used by major brands that everyone’s heard of and by volume we’re one of the leaders in the mobile telecoms industry.
Historically we’ve been a technology driven company but these days we work much more closely with customers. This provides some great opportunities for travel, assignments abroad and career advancement.
